WASAC KIDS CAMP (top)

Aboriginal children aged 7 - 12 have the opportunity to participate in a wonderful array of activities each summer! The children participate in a variety of activities including soccer, swimming, basketball, crafts and cultural activities, within a friendly environment situated within their community. The WASAC Kids Camp operates at the Old Exhibition Grounds that is perfectly situated within the highest population of Aboriginal people in any city across Canada.
UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG ECO-U KIDS CAMP (top)

WASAC is proud to assist the University of Winnipeg’s Innovative Learning Centre with their Eco-U Kids Camp. The Eco-U camp provides children with the opportunity to attend a day-camp and learn about environmental issues, indigenous science, nature and wildlife. The Eco-U camp is completely free of charge and children are provided with transportation, nutritional meals, supplies and Eco-U t-shirts. A major focus will be on spreading the message to their friends, schools and families, that we all have a part to play…REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE! The participants will finish the week with a new appreciation for Mother Earth and a better understanding of their impact on the environment.YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM (top)

The Youth Achievement Program offers the opportunity for Aboriginal youth to train and receive practical recreation experience down a positive and enriching path in becoming the leaders of tomorrow.
WASAC KICKERS SOCCER PROGRAM (top)
The WASAC Kickers Soccer Program introduces the widely-loved game of soccer to Aboriginal children in the inner city. Soccer games and practices are organized for the participants, to teach them the skills, rules and techniques of the game. The soccer teams are run in partnership with the Winnipeg School Division. The children’s teams play in the inner-city soccer league which allows the players to practice their skills in a competitive and fun environment.WASAC NORTH (top)

WASAC North brings together an ensemble of Aboriginal Youth Mentors from WASAC, who with pride and passion share their knowledge of sport, culture and community development with Aboriginal youth from communities across the North such as Shamattawa, Pauingassi, God's Lake Narrows, Lac Brochet, Duck Bay, Pine Creek and Camperville. The goal of this initiative is to promote community spirit and strengthen sustainable, local community programs. Young people from northern communities will be trained by the WASAC Youth Team in the methods and structures that are needed to build community involvement while promoting sport, culture and natural education connections.TRUE NORTH HOCKEY ACADEMY (top)

Students from Chief Peguis, Donwood, Strathcona, Buchanan, Hedges and Crestview schools are given the opportunity to participate in a unique program that focuses on the development of ice hockey skills. With the leadership of professional coaches and instructors, the players participate in a mix of drills and fun activities all while learning the rules of the game.TOUCHDOWN FOR KIDS (top)

UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG ECO KIDS ON CAMPUS (top)
WASAC partnered up with the University of Winnipeg’s Innovative Learning Centre to deliver a unique program that focuses on making post secondary education relevant to elementary students. Students from inner city schools are exposed to a university campus environment complete with university professors instructing classes.
STUDENT MENTOR ABORIGINAL ROLEMODEL TUTORSHIP PROGRAM (SMART) (top)
The Student Mentor Aboriginal Role-Model Tutorship (SMART) Program is a project with an initiative for cross-mentoring Aboriginal students. This groundbreaking project has 3 stages. The first is the Higher Learning after School Program where the students are assisted with their school work while also engaging in fun activities after school. The second phrase is called Building Leadership, where students will be educated in a wide array of areas all with one goal in mind; to enhance their leadership qualities. The third stage is called the Community Involvement Youth Role Modeling where the youth use the skills they have learned and pass them along to students who are younger and in similar circumstances. Each year the cycle will continue and the result will be more Aboriginal youth being equipped with self-confidence and self-esteem necessary for them to springboard past any of the barriers that are hindering them from reaching their potential.WASAC EXPRESS (top)
The WASAC Express Program is a multifaceted event of unprecedented proportion featuring Aboriginal talent from across the province. Propelled by awe-inspiring musicians, singers and dancers, WASAC Express will transform the stage into joyous frenzy. WASAC Express will partner with Aboriginal communities across Manitoba to put together a jaw-dropping show which will raise funds that will benefit the youth living in these communities. These funds will provide a financial base which will be used to implement youth community programs and initiatives.

The Eco-Kids on Campus program allows 40 Grade 5 and 6 children to come to UWinnipeg's campus once a week, for 10 weeks, to do various types of science activities including DNA sampling and blood typing, squid dissection and constructing mechanical machines. Strathcona School pioneered Eco-Kids on Campus and in 2010 a second inner city school, Wellington School, is participating.

Approximately 150 students attended the South East Collegiate Valentine’s Day Dance 2010 hosted by WASAC. Bubba B from Hot 103 was entertaining the crowd with Adam Troy as the DJ. Concessions were available for the teens. Prizes were awarded throughout the night for different games, nominations of the king & queen, prince & princess, and SEC’s best couple. Overall the event was a great success – everybody was safe & they all had a great time!

18 youth from South East Collegiate & Shamattawa have received the opportunity to join WASAC on a trip to Alberta, Canada. The group departed by bus from Winnipeg on Sunday, March 21st travelling to Lloydminster, Alberta. The following morning the group headed to Edmonton where they spent the whole day at West Edmonton Mall. While at the mall the group enjoyed shopping, the waterslides at World Water Park, and the rides at Galaxy Land! Tuesday the group travelled to Banff, Alberta where they did sightseeing and enjoyed the Banff Hot Springs followed by a tour of Lake Louise and the Columbia Ice field. The tour was a great way to showcase the beauty of the Canadian Rockies. Wednesday the group went to the Blackfoot Crossings Historical Park and followed by departing towards home stopping overnight in Regina and arriving home Thursday, March 25th!

WASAC and approximately 300 youth and children attended the 3rd annual Winnipeg Chief of Police 5 km Fun Run. The goal of the run is to promote the community and encourage youth to become more active.

The dream room is a room located in the Abraham Beardy Memorial School in Shamattawa, Manitoba. The vision for this room was to inspire the children and youth of Shamattawa to have dreams, goals and a plan for the future. It will be a place where they can grow, play and be themselves. The goal of this room is to be a fun escape for the youth but also a place of inspiration, a place of change and a place where they can just be a kid. This room will be multifunctional by being a playroom, game room, meeting room and a place where people can just go to escape for a little while and be encompassed in a peaceful yet energizing atmosphere. Thanks to all the youth & community members that contributed their efforts into transforming this room!
WASAC NORTH – CAMPERVILLE, DUCKBAY, & PINE CREEK: Coming Together Event (by WASAC Staff, published Thursday, 29 April 2010 12:45)

WASAC staff travel to Camperville, Duckbay, and Pine Creek to host a large event for the three communities. On April 29th staff & volunteers put on a Pancake Breakfast for the community at Philomene Chartrand School located in Duck Bay with almost 200 people in attendance!During the afternoon of the 29th the group travelled to Pine Creek where they hosted a fun school event for the children & youth of Minegoziibe Anishinabe School. Some of the activities included face painting, relay races, hockey shootouts, fun photo shoots, and a hot dog lunch. All of the students got to enjoy a special hour long performance from the hip hop group Brakada, followed by a hip hop music workshop conducted by the Brakada brothers. The school event brought together 220 students, 27 volunteers, and almost 100community members.That evening the Community Cultural Event took place in Camperville where local bands, square dance teams, and fiddlers came together toputon a fantastic night of performances. With over 500 people in attendance the whole place was buzzing with energy and excitement. WASAC would like to thank all of the volunteers, performers, and attendees for making this event such a wonderful experience!

WASAC Kids Camp and Eco-U Kids Camp Participant Recruitment Begins! (by WASAC Staff, published Monday, 03 May 2010 12:53)
This spring WASAC will be recruiting students ages 7 – 12 from over 66 schools from Winnipeg # 1, River East Transcona, and Seven Oaks School Divisions to attend our summer camps. Recruitment is an 8 week process and the success of it will mean 1700 kids will get the opportunity to walk through camp doors this summer. We appreciate all the support & co-operation of all the schools involved!

45 students from Faraday School, Champlain School, Ralph Brown School, Machray School, and St. John’s High School attended WASAC’s 2nd annual week long Touchdown Football Camp. The players, ages 11 – 15 were offered the program at no cost, equipment for free, transportation, as well as lunch and snacks for no charge. Camp participants were treated to Friday night’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers game against the Toronto Argonauts.
WASAC ensures that all participants have the necessary "tools" required for active participation. These "tools" remove the barriers that hinder participation and will have an impact on Aboriginal people's quality of life. WASACs proud to have been a part of the Lil' Moose Program with the students of Donwood Elementary School and Chief Peguis Junior High School. We would like to thank the Manitoba Moose Yearling Foundation And the River East Transcona School Division for their partnership in this great program. 45 students from both schools were all part of the groundbreaking initiative. Students were each given their own set of equipment that they were allowed to keep after the program is over. Over 18 pratices, the students were given different lessons in hockey. Each practice included transportation to and from the arena, a healthy nutritious lunch for the students and an hour of ice time where the students were given professional hockey instruction. The students each had the chance to attend a Manitoba Moose game and participate in a program ending game with another school. WASAC thanks all students, partners and staff for all of the hard work that made this program possible

While many youth do not have specific qualifications and self confidence at the beginning of the program, they are eager to apply all their new skills and experience new activities and learn about Aboriginal culture.

- The WASAC Team delivered a day of greatness and enjoyment for the students and staff of Abraham Beardy Memorial School in Shamattawa.
- The students were divided up into five different groups for the whole day and participated in five different Olympics sports and games, which they got bronze, silver and gold medals. The students also got their Olympic pictures taken and it would be designed as a sport illustrated magazine cover. The students had fun and got a goody bag for participating.

- WASAC had delivered a Christmas celebration show to the Abraham Bready Memorial School with the Gaudry Boys Band and the Norman Chief Memorial Dancers.
- Also WASAC Staff had given every student their magazine cover picture as their Christmas gift. The kids were very excited and absolutely love their pictures. This instilled pride in both the students and the teachers!
